Decking Banksia Beach

When our client in Banksia Beach came to us, they had a pool that deserved a lot better than the tired timber decking surrounding it. What they ended up with is a genuine outdoor living space — the kind you actually want to spend your weekend in.

The Brief

The goals were simple but the execution mattered: a deck that could handle constant pool splash and Queensland humidity without cupping, warping or silvering off in a couple of years, shade that didn't chew up half the yard with posts and shadow, and pool fencing that met Australian safety standards without turning the whole space into a cage. Three trades, one cohesive result.

Composite Decking Built to Last

We went with Woodevo Sandstone composite decking over a fully engineered timber subframe. A few reasons that combination works so well around a pool:

• Timber subframe, set out properly  joist spacing tightened up for the composite board span, with a slight fall built in for drainage so water doesn't pool under the boards or against the pool coping.
• Composite over hardwood boards — no splinters, no re-oiling every year, and it won't cup or bow the way timber decking can once it's copping pool water and full sun daily. For a young family with bare feet running around the pool, that's not a small thing.
• Sandstone colourway — picked to sit naturally against the glass fencing and green backdrop of the block, rather than fighting with it.

If you've had a timber deck around a pool before, you'll know the maintenance cycle — sanding, oiling, chasing splinters. Composite decking takes that off the to-do list entirely.

Aluminium Pergola for Shade Without the Bulk

The pergola sits off the back of the house and runs a slimline aluminium frame with a curved fascia — it throws proper shade over the lounge area without needing a forest of support posts eating into the deck space. Aluminium was the right call here over timber for a few reasons: it won't rot, warp or need repainting, it copes with coastal humidity without corroding, and the slim profile keeps the sightlines to the pool and the bush backdrop open rather than boxed in.

Frameless Glass Pool Fencing

Pool fencing is non-negotiable under Queensland pool safety laws, but it doesn't have to dominate the yard. Frameless glass panels do the job — self-closing, self-latching gate, compliant heights and gaps — while keeping the view straight through to the lawn and treeline. It's the difference between "fenced pool" and "pool that happens to have a boundary."

The Result

What was a fairly ordinary backyard is now a proper entertaining zone — composite decking that'll handle years of pool days without a maintenance headache, shade exactly where it's needed, and fencing that ticks every safety box without closing the space in.
